Sparkling Gem 1880 Three Dollar Gold Piece PCGS MS65

Although well-saved by contemporary collectors and usually available today overall, most of the low-mintage late-series three dollar gold issues are conditionally rare at the Gem grade level. Among these condition rarities is the 1880, which boasts an enticingly low mintage of only 1,000 pieces. From among those, PCGS has graded only 20 MS65’s with just 4 higher. We’re talking about a rare “rare coin”! While not readily apparent in our images, this beauty boasts highly lustrous, semi-prooflike surfaces and lots of pizzazz.

Listed at $18,000 in the CDN CPG, $20,000 in the PCGS price guide and $18,500 in Trends.

Because of its low mintage, the 1880 is one of the more popular dates in the series. After all, only 1,000 business strikes were minted along with just 36 proofs. However, because this date was hoarded to a degree, once again, by John Beck among others, the 1880 is not nearly as rare as many other dates with significantly higher mintages.
