Named for its designer, George T. Morgan, Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint. Perhaps the most popular of all United States coin series, Morgan Dollars, were minted from 1878 through 1904, and again in 1921. Some varieties were produced, mostly in the early years of this type: 1878 8 Tail Feathers, 7 Tail Feathers, 7 over 8 Tail Feathers; 1880-CC 80 over 79, 8 over 7; 1880-S 8 over 7, 0 over 9; etc. The interesting aspect of some of the rarities in this series is that they are very expensive in premium Mint State and very affordable in circulated grades, like: 1883-S, 1894-O, 1896-O, 1897-O, 1901, and 1904-S.
