Category Description

Half Dimes

Authorized by the Federal Act of April 2, 1792, just 1,500 sample half dimes were made supposedly with the portrait of Martha Washington, using silver supplied by the First Family. But the first regular issue of half dimes carried the 1794 date. Ms. Liberty appeared with flowing hair in 1794 and 1795, with a bow in her long hair from 1796 through 1805, and with a cap inscribed LIBERTY from 1829 through 1837. The denomination “5C” didn’t appear until 1829, on the reverse. The design was changed beginning in 1837 to Liberty Seated, and remained so through the end of this denomination in 1873.

Dimes

The “dime” (then called “disme”) was one of the coins approved for the United States in the Congressional resolution passed on March 3, 1791, defined as “the tenth part of a dollar.” But it was not until 1796 that the first dimes were minted. Ms. Liberty appeared with a bow in her long hair from 1796 through 1807, and with a cap inscribed LIBERTY from 1809 through 1837. The denomination “10C” didn’t appear until 1809, on the reverse. The design was changed to Liberty Seated from 1837 through 1891. The Liberty Head (usually called the “Barber” type after the designer Charles Barber) design was launched in 1892, and was used through 1916 when it was replaced by the Winged Liberty Head (usually called the “Mercury” type), which was used through 1945. Famous rarities in the Mercury dime series are the low mintage 1916-D and the overdate 1942/1. Three-time President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died in 1945, and appeared on dimes beginning in 1945, through the present.
